Word Counter

Paste your text and watch words, characters, sentences and reading time update live.

How to use the Word Counter

  1. Paste or type your text into the box.
  2. Counts update live as you type — no button needed.
  3. Words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and reading time are shown together. Clear Text resets everything.

Why word counts matter more than you think

Almost every kind of writing comes with a number attached: X (Twitter) posts are capped at 280 characters, YouTube titles at 100, meta descriptions ideally 150–160, college essays at 500–2000 words, and many client briefs pay by the word.

Going over looks sloppy; staying safely under looks intentional. A live counter removes all guesswork while you edit.

Platform limits cheat-sheet

PlatformLimit
X / Twitter post280 characters
SEO meta description~155–160 characters
YouTube title100 characters
Instagram caption2,200 characters
LinkedIn post3,000 characters
WhatsApp status700 characters

Writing tips that pair well with a counter

Aim for sentences under 20 words — the sentence count and average word length here help you spot walls of text.

One idea per paragraph. If a paragraph crosses 150 words, look for a natural place to break it.

For SEO content, 300–600 words usually works for tool pages and 1,000+ for in-depth guides — but always write for the reader first.

Frequently asked questions

How does the word counter define a word?
Any sequence of non-space characters counts as one word — the same convention used by word processors.
Does it count characters with spaces?
The character count shown includes spaces and line breaks, which is what most platform limits measure.
Is my text private?
Completely. Counting happens in your browser with JavaScript; your text is never uploaded, logged or stored.
What is reading time based on?
An average silent reading speed of 200 words per minute — the standard used by blogs and Medium-style apps.
Is there a word limit?
No practical limit — paste entire chapters if you like. Very large texts remain instant because nothing leaves your device.
